We had Mackenzie evaluated at Huntington Learning Center this past week for some concerns that we have had with her reading, writing, etc. Well, last night, Kip and I went in for our parent conference - which was very thorough by the way. I told Kip it would last an hour and he was like - no way - well it did. We were right about where Kenzie is and need to do something to get her up to par. But a few funny things happened during the meeting that I want to share with you. FIRST - this is not THAT funny but I think you will agree with me how ridiculous this is: To get Mackenzie where she needs to be, they recommended 240 hours of Tutoring...at $52 per hour...they suggested 20 hours a week over the summer...that is equal to $12,480 for 12 weeks. A college education here at DeVry is around $50,000 and that is for a 4 year degree!!!!!! What the heck!!! 20 hours a week is $1040 a week for TUTORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so sure! It is not going to happen. As beneficial as I am sure it could be for her - we are working on another solution!
Also - here is the other funny part - we were having the lady tell us some of the things that Kenzie said during her time there. Well, she asked her about her favorite subject (MATH), fun things she liked to do outside of school (BALLET, SOFTBALL, SOCCER), did she like reading (NO), did she have any brothers and sisters (YES, A BROTHER IN HIGH SCHOOL).
WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Mackenzie is so random! I have no idea where she got that from. We do have cute high school boys in the houses next door to us but they are not her brothers! What the heck!?!?
Anyhow - wanted to share.

Hey, my friend who homeschools just recommended this website as a good one for reading proficiency and comprehension.
totallanguageplus.com
I also found it extremely helpful meeting with the librarian. She pointed us in exactly the right direction for books at the appropriate reading level and she chose one for reading aloud to him.
Hope this helps! And btw- that tutoring quote is insane.
She is sooo funny! Love that baby girl! I talked to her on the phone yesterday. I am surprised you didn't just pick that 12 grand from the money tree out back and say, "sign her up" (smile). Yes, you have many alternatives, I'll be happy to help if you want some ideas. Have a happy day! XOXOXkc
as a kinder teacher i will be glad to give you my professional opinion that their quoted amount is RIDICULOUS. i wish i was closer i would totally help out with tutoring! and i love that she said she has a high school brother.
Find out if any of the teachers tutor in the summer. I bet they do. Remind me too-I have a book for you. How to teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons. It did wonders for Emma.
